Writetober 2024, Horror Haven: Day 22: The Haunting of Alterum Nigrum
Alterum Nigrum's Hospital, a once-proud institution nestled in the quiet corners of the city, had fallen into a state of decay. As years passed on, its glory and grandeur faded, replaced by an eerie silence. The once-bustling halls were now haunted by the restless spirits of those who had suffered and died within its walls.
Professor Cricket, a man of wealth and influence, had presided over the hospital for decades. His reputation as a brilliant physician was a facade, a carefully crafted one that concealed a darker truth. Cricket was a monster, a man who used his position to inflict suffering and death upon his patients.
His crimes were not confined to the operating room. Cricket had ties to the underworld, a connection that allowed him to silence any who dared to question his methods. But even the most powerful men can make mistakes. One night, a patient's family member threatened to expose Cricket's malpractice. The professor dispatched his mob associates to deal with the threat, but a tragic error led to the death of the innocent patient.
The incident sent shockwaves through the city, and Cricket's empire crumbled. The mob disbanded out of fear, but the murder remained unsolved. The souls of those who had perished under Cricket's care were trapped in a purgatory of their own making. Bound to the hospital by their unfinished business, they haunted its corridors, their cries echoing through the empty halls.
The spirits communicated with the living, sending cryptic messages to the families of their victims. They yearned for justice, for their stories to be told, their suffering acknowledged. Finally, after years of torment, a young woman, the granddaughter of one of Cricket's victims, discovered the truth. Armed with the evidence provided by the spirits, she confronted the professor, exposing his crimes to the world.
With Cricket brought to justice, the spirits of Alterum Nigrum's were finally able to find peace. Their haunting had not been in vain. They had ensured that the truth would be revealed, and that the man who had caused them so much pain would pay for his sins.
