Writetober 2023, Day 25: 'Burned'

 Twas' the night of nights at the Montgomery family's beloved vacation home. The home was located near a eerie, desolate lake. It was a fair summer day, and all seemed well as dusk fell. The family had spent the day settling in, before they cooked a small meal and went to bed. Joyful cicadas danced as the night went on. Suddenly, the son, Alex, woke up.. He arose to the haunting smell of smoke and the humming of fire. 

He ran across the long, decaying hallway, trying to inform his parents of the disaster. His parents room had already burned. Alex ran across the house, hoping to find his parents so they could escape. He didn't find them.. 

Alex grabbed his few possessions he could salvage and left the house. He briefly looked out into the graveyard that had become his house, watching the flames eat his house. He then fled the estate, running into the woods. He dashed as far as he could, before resting in the woods. He lived in the woods for a short lapse of time, before rushing to the nearby small town where he started a new life.

Years have passed, and Alex is still tormented from the night. He has detailed visions of his parent's bodies burning, and his childhood melting into a distant memory. At night, he dreams of the horrific visions..
